I believe that there’s greatness in you.  I believe that you can accomplish whatever you set your heart to.  I understand that those goals, aspirations and desires differ for each of us.  Is the American dream lost?  Is it time to recalibrate our expectations?  Is the gilded age of conspicuous consumption over?  Has the American economy peaked?  Will we never get that 4 – 5% delta of unemployed jobs back?  Should we moderate our dreams, goals and expectations?

I say, “No.”  Dream on.  Believe.  Go for it.  Never give up.  Make a difference – now.

Driving down the highway to a wedding in Chattanooga, TN, I read this article by David A. Kaplan in the September 6, 2010 issue of FORTUNE magazine:

Bill Gates’ Favorite Teacher

Khan turns out thousands of videos from a converted walk-in closet in his Silicon Valley home.

Salman Khan made a couple hundred dollar investment in a converted closet to publish over 1,600 YouTube educational videos and is changing education around the globe!  Kaplan and FORTUNE say:

Khan Academy, with Khan as the only teacher, appears on YouTube and elsewhere and is by any measure the most popular educational site on the web. Khan's playlist of 1,630 tutorials (at last count) are now seen an average of 70,000 times a day -- nearly double the student body at Harvard and Stanford combined. Since he began his tutorials in late 2006, Khan Academy has received 18 million page views worldwide, including from the Gates progeny.”

And although some may disrespect the educational “McNuggets”, I submit that there may be supplemental value in concise educational excellence – Kaplan and FORTUNE go on to say, “But while you obviously don't learn calculus in one session -- the subject is divided into 191 parts, which doesn't include 32 more in precalc -- Khan's components seem to hit the sweet spot of length and substance.”  Heck, it’s the largest ‘school’ in the world and Khan just won a $2 Million award / prize from a Google contest.

I find these stories both informative and inspirational.  I mean, who do you know who might be able to use these educational videos?  Your own kids?  Friends kids?  Teachers?  Education and acquiring knowledge is changing fast.  Educational institutions of the future will look very different.

And, this guy took the initiative, didn’t wait for help to show up, seized the moment and took action.  He’s making a difference right now where he’s at.  Just do it!  He did it!

You can change the world, you can change your company, you can change yourself.

I believe there’s greatness in each and every one of us.

Choose to seize yours.
