Mike’s Reflections on Edward Lowe’s Legacy
At the beginning of this year, i3 Business Solutions was honored to receive the Michigan 50 Businesses to Watch award. The award recognized the growth and success of local organizations here in Michigan. Last week, Mike Ritsema, i3 President, visited an awardee conference at the Edward Lowe Foundation… here is what he said about his experience:
“I am amazed by … Kitty Litter.
Due to Michigan 50 Companies to Watch I was invited to the Edward Lowe Foundation Leadership Retreat. Although the agenda was ambiguous, the cost (free), reputation and location on 2,000 acres 1 ½ hours south of Grand Rapids compelled me.
Edward Lowe invented Kitty Litter and left a $100 Million endowment committed to growing 2nd stage companies who represent 18% of America's employers but create 38% of new jobs. He passed away 25 years ago and is still impacting job creation in America today. What a legacy!
It is good, especially for guys my age, to pause occasionally and ask:
1. What’s my purpose? Why am I here?
2. How can I make a difference? What’s my legacy?
We have our giants in West Michigan from DeVos, Van Andel, Meijer, and Secchia – but who is this guy, who passed away 25 years ago, 1 ½ hours south of town who leaves an endowment focused on helping small businesses create jobs supporting families all across America?
Some of us are given a little. Some of us are given a lot. Edward Lowe was given Kitty Litter – and made a lasting impact!
I’m impressed and inspired!
