The American Dental Association (ADA) recently announced that it may have accidentally mailed USB thumb drives that contained malicious software to thousands of dental offices nationwide.

Recently, Monica Donahue’s 19 year old daughter received a Facebook friend request and the story made the Grand Rapids Press. Surprised? I wouldn’t doubt it, because hardly ever does a Facebook friend request make the news. However, when the friend request is from a hospital security guard a day after a visit to that hospital and is in violation of HIPAA standards; it becomes a much bigger deal.

Recent HIPAA Changes and Deadlines

The HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule was enacted in 2013 by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) based on statutory changes under the HITECH Act. Most of it went into effect in 2013, but it also gave covered entities until September 22, 2014, to update the existing “Business Associate Agreements” they already had in place.
